What is a Clean Truck Check?
Clean Truck Check (CTC) is California’s Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance program run by CARB. It requires most heavy-duty vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR that operate on California public roads (even if not registered in CA) to keep emissions control systems properly maintained and to meet reporting + emissions compliance testing requirements.
Owners manage compliance through CTC-VIS, CARB’s online system where you can report vehicle/owner info, pay required fees, and view compliance deadlines and test results.
Why is it important?
1) It helps reduce harmful emissions
CARB’s purpose is to ensure emissions systems remain well-maintained and functioning throughout a vehicle’s useful life to reduce harmful emissions.
Cleaner operations matter everywhere, including the Imperial Valley, where heavy-duty traffic is common.
2) It helps you avoid compliance problems (and downtime)
CARB’s emissions compliance testing requirements are effective October 1, 2024, with testing deadlines beginning January 1, 2025.
CTC-VIS shows your deadlines so you can schedule ahead instead of reacting last minute.
3) It can affect registration status if you don’t comply
CARB has guidance on CA DMV registration holds tied to Clean Truck Check compliance for certain cases, and they recommend testing in advance of your deadline so there’s time for repairs if needed.
Quick overview of how compliance works
- Create/maintain your CTC-VIS account (fees, deadlines, test results).
- Complete emissions compliance testing by your deadline (CARB explains the schedule and timing windows).
- Fix issues if needed and retest before the deadline to stay compliant.
